And what are your impressions of it?
I have been once [I actually live in Fresno]. I'm quite in awe that this one man had the vision and dedication to build this underground lair by himself. And if you have ever lived in the Central Valley you know how brutally hot the summers can be. Being underground, though, you wouldn't feel it. It also appeals to the child/spelunker in me.

Re: Have you actually been?
Tue, February 24, 2004 - 1:42 PMYes, I've been many, many times. I lived in Fresno around 12 years (early 70s till 1985) and grew up with the thing. I remember it closed for a long time because of vandalism or something. when I learned of it's re opening I started visiting once a year. in July. it gives a nice perspective between above ground, grimy sweltering Shaw ave. next to 101 and underground, a cool peaceful & inspirational paradise. I absolutely adore the gardens. if I could, I'd build my own. when my mother was a child she also visited. I believe it's where her prom was held. if you like Spelunking, you should try the Oakland/Berkeley storm drains. Cacophony society sometimes gives clandestine tours. Marin military bunkers are fun too...

Re: Have you actually been?
Thu, March 4, 2004 - 10:34 AMI grew up in Madera back in the '60s and '70s. Since I went to school on the southeast side of Fresno, every day I'd ride past the Forestiere Underground Gardens on the school bus. It seemed like such a mysterious and exotic place to me--like a secret oasis in the Sahara. Finally, in-between the 4th and 5th grades, I went with a group from my parent's church. It must've been in summer, because it was about 100 degrees outside. Once we got down into the gardens, the cool air was so dramatic compared to the heat above. It even smelled totally different from Shaw and the railroad tracks, just a stone's throw away.
I was so impressed that I tried carving out my own cave in the back of my family's property. Although I used a pick and shovel, and I alternated soaking the ground and chipping away at it, I never got more than a few feet down, into the bloody hardpan. Still, for years afterwards, I would sit in class and design my own version of the Underground Gardens that I planned to build one day.
I'd like to visit the Gardens when I go see my parents, but I'm afraid that I'd be disappointed by any modernization. Has anyone been recently? Has it been bastardized? -

Re: Have you actually been?
Thu, March 4, 2004 - 1:46 PMNo, it hasn't been bastardized. however, last year the old orange tree died. what's really nice in being able to munch on some of the hanging grapes during the tour... -

Thu, March 4, 2004 - 7:25 PMOh...that's too bad about the tree. Was that the one that had a bunch of different citrus fruits grafted on it? -

Re: Have you actually been?
Tue, May 18, 2004 - 10:06 PMI shot some photos of the Garden for the LA Times. I submitted a photo in the album that ran a couple of years ago. It's an interesting place with interesting people who run the tour. Wife and son. I'm from Fresno and that was my first visit there. -

Re: Have you actually been?
Fri, May 28, 2004 - 3:31 PMOnly close enough to look thru the fence years ago after having my imagination fired by an article on it in Coevolution Quarterly (the folks who did the Whole Earth catalogs) Are there any tours of it these days? I heard somewhere it was caught up in legal wranglings between surviving relatives. True? Is there any attempt to get it on historic preservation status??
Of course these questions may be asked in other posts here, but I was so excited to see this tribe I just joined and posted this!

Tue, October 25, 2005 - 10:31 AMYes, and it was lovely. The inginuity made me laugh and be humble. What an amazing thing to create...and out of need. Really and inspiration.

Re: Have you actually been?
Tue, May 15, 2007 - 5:02 PMYep, once. Loved it. My only regret is that I let a "do not enter" sign disuade me from checking out a small side passage that, I later saw on a map, connected to the several acres of the complex that are not on the public tour. -

Tue, May 15, 2007 - 5:05 PMBy the way, my favorite room was the reading room under the translucent goldfish pool.
